Mikkeli region in Southeastern Finland! This freeware scenery covers 5,100 square
kilometres of Mikkeli and its surrounding municipalities Hirvensalmi,
Juva, Kangasniemi, Mäntyharju and Puumala (see
Please note that the scenery features only the summer daylight textures with no autogen, mesh or water masks. However, the Mikkeli city center and its neighbouring Kenkävero and Nuijamies quarters are fully covered with custom 3D buildings closely matching their real life counterparts. The scenery has been designed to be used with FinnMesh 2.0 or a similar mesh product that covers this part of Finland. Another highly recommended add-on is FinnObjects.
You can use two airports within the scenery:
the FSX default Mikkeli airport (EFMI) and Pistohiekka airstrip in Puumala. The latter is
not modelled in FSX, but works quite well with this scenery as an aerial
image. The landing chart for the Pistohiekka airstrip is included within
the scenery package. Charts for EFMI can be found from
You can download the scenery (4 GB) for
Simply unpack the zip file and move "Mikkeli
Region" folder into your FSX's "Addon Scenery" folder (the default
location is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator
X). Then activate the scenery normally in FSX's Scenery Library. Finally,
set the season to the summer and launch into the skies! Alternatively, you can install only the
desired areas of the scenery - please refer to Readme for this type of installation.
This was my first scenery project and a thrill to do; realizing the photoscenery of Mikkeli has been my dream for ages and I'm very happy it's finally done and available for those interested in flying in this area.
Aerial photographs have been obtained for free from the National Land Survey of Finland (NLS). Since the source material was partly pretty weak, a great deal of adjustments have been done to make it look better. 3D buildings have been exported from the free 3D model of the Mikkeli city center with modifications from me.
The process of making the Finnish
photosceneries can be learned from the
FSnordic.net Forums (in Finnish). Trust me, it's not that difficult as
it seems at first glance and it's more down to your patience once you've
learned the process.
As of December 2014, there are no plans of
releasing the second version of Mikkeli Region, but if that time comes,
I'll try to include the currently missing Pertunmaa municipality which
also belongs to this region.
And I will definitely start to work on EFMI and its surroundings...
